When a survey finds asbestos, the instinct is to get rid of it. Often that is not the safest or cheapest option.
When to leave it
Material in good condition that won't be disturbed can be left in place and re-inspected. This is common for cement roofs and sound boards in St Helens industrial units.
When to encapsulate
If material is sound but exposed to knocks, sealing it with a coating or boarding over it protects it at a fraction of the cost of removal.
When to remove
Damaged material, or anything in the way of planned works, should come out. Licensable materials must be removed by an HSE-licensed contractor.
